Our Story

Humble Beginnings

Our story begins in 1904, when this robust brick structure was first erected as the W.H. McElwain Shoe Factory. At a time when Manchester was famously known as "Shoe City," our walls were the backbone of American industry, producing everything from handsome dress shoes to military boots. When you step inside, you're walking on floors that once supported the thriving hub of a global manufacturing giant.

The In-Between: A Century of Service

The building’s life didn't end with footwear. Over the next hundred years, its massive, adaptable spaces were continually repurposed, demonstrating an incredible resilience: It transitioned from shoe production to educating the next generation as a State Trade School.

It later housed a cutting-edge circuit board manufacturer, Electropac, for over three decades, bridging the gap between old industry and the tech era.

This history of continuous evolution is the DNA of The Factory.

The Grand Rebirth

The most exciting chapter began with an award-winning, meticulous

Adaptive Reuse project from 2019 to 2021 by Liz Hitchcock. This was a labor of love, focused on preserving the building's authentic soul while reimagining its future.

She didn't just renovate; we celebrated the past by keeping the original timber beams, exposed brick, and massive windows. The result is a stunning blend of genuine industrial heritage and chic, modern design, the perfect, unique setting for today's creators and community.
